COVID-19 Mass Testing in Schools

Dear Parents/Carers

COVID-19 Mass Testing in Schools

Harton will be taking part in mass testing for COVID-19 in January 2021. This is a huge but important undertaking to support the national efforts against Coronavirus.

I notified you recently via our website that the school will only be open in the week beginning 4 January 2021 to the following groups of students:

  • Those in Years 11 and 13
  • Key worker and vulnerable children

All other year groups will be expected to engage in home learning for that week.

However, in order for staff to plan for the delivery of remote teaching to the vast majority of students, and to begin to plan for the mass testing, Monday 4 January 2021 will be a staff INSET day; we will be closed to all students.

The Department for Education has granted us permission to take this additional INSET day, and all other South Tyneside secondary schools have agreed to this.

  • School will re-open to Years 11 and 13, Key worker and vulnerable children from Tuesday 5 January.
  • Home learning for Years 7, 8, 9, 10 and 12 will also commence on the 5 January.

We will notify you in January of our plans to conduct mass testing, once we have clearer guidelines for such from the Government. Please do bear with us as we await further guidance and clarification on this matter.

All that remains is to wish you and your loved ones a peaceful and safe Christmas.

We look forward to welcoming our students back to school – virtually or in person – on the 5 January 2021.

Very best wishes,

Sir Ken Gibson (Executive Headteacher)
David Amos (Head of School)
