Rainbow Flag Award Update

Harton Academy believes that respecting and valuing individual differences and the appreciation of, and promotion of, cultural diversity is crucial if every child is to thrive.

We are committed to breaking down barriers and cultural divides, instilling values of acceptance and mutual respect that children and young people will carry with them throughout their lives.

In May 2023 we embarked upon ‘The Rainbow Flag Award’. In September 2023, we were pleased to achieve the ‘skilled teacher’ aspect of the award.

Since the beginning of the academic year 2023/24, we have been working on other components of the award. We are delighted to report that we have successfully completed two further sections of the award (January 2024). Therefore, the school have now received two further badges recognising our achievements (see below) for our ‘Pastoral Support’ and ‘Inclusive Curriculum.’

The awarding body congratulated our curriculum work by stating: ‘as a school, you are providing positive representation of LGBT+ lives, people and families. You have provided further positive representation of LGBT+ identities and your Personal Development curriculum covers many interesting topics that relate to the LGBT+ community.’

Whilst, the awarding body also recognised our pastoral work by explaining that ‘the clear signposting to relevant organisations demonstrates a proactive approach in supporting students. Additionally, the promotion of safe spaces and accessible contacts for support further underscores your commitment. Testimonies from students affirm the positive impact of your efforts in creating an environment that is inclusive and supportive for staff, students, and parents alike.’

We are continuing with our efforts to make Harton Academy as inclusive as possible, whilst enjoying the challenges presented by the Rainbow Flag Award.
