Course Introduction

This course will provide students with the knowledge and understanding of the attributes and skills that are required within health, social care and early years sectors. The BTEC Extended Certificate in Health and Social Care attracts UCAS points and is widely recognised by universities and employers. Learners will study four units over the two years of study, two of which will be externally assessed. The BTEC L3 Extended Certificate will also allow learners to undertake a number of work experience placements.

The qualification aims to develop and sustain an interest in: health, social care and early years care and education. A wide range of subjects are covered which will raise your awareness of the many rewarding career opportunities that exist in health, social care and early years sectors.

What will I Study?

In year 12 you will study and be assessed on the following two mandatory units.

• Human Lifespan Development
• Sociological Perspectives

You will learn about these topics through classroom and work based activities that will enable you to apply your knowledge, skills and understanding to real work scenarios. This is known as ‘Applied Learning’. This will involve visiting a range of settings and listening to guest speakers who work in the sectors that you are studying.

In year 13 you focus on addressing factors that affect needs, health and wellbeing.  You will also evaluate the different issues involved in providing efficient service delivery in the different sectors of health, social care and early years. Candidates are to be assessed in the following key areas of study:

• Working in Health and Social Care
• Meeting Individual Care and Support Needs

How will I be assessed?

The course is assessed by a combination of examination and coursework.

Where does the course lead?

Children’s Workforce: early years professions, teaching and school support occupations, educational welfare officer, paediatric nursing, educational psychology, children’s social worker.

Justice Sector: probation officer, victim/witness support worker, police officer, youth offending team worker, community safety worker, substance misuse worker.

Social Care Sector: social work, care management, counselling, community support and outreach workers, rehabilitation officers.

Health Care Sector: nursing, midwifery, health care scientist, occupational therapist, dietician, mental health professional, operating department.
