Teacher Subject Specialism Training (TSST) In Secondary Mathematics, Physics, Core Maths and MFL

Harton Academy is delighted to announce that in addition to continuing to offer our own successful TSST programmes, the academy has now been appointed by the Department of Education as Regional Lead School for the complete Secondary Mathematics, Physics, Core Maths and Modern Foreign languages provision across the North Region for a second consecutive year.

TSST In Secondary Mathematics, Physics, Core Maths and MFL is a Department of Education funded initiative to improve subject knowledge of non-specialist teachers and returning teachers to increase the number of hours taught in these subjects, in order to build capacity and enable schools to manage workforce and deployment challenges across these subjects. These free training programmes are specifically targeted at;

  • Non-specialist teachers who could potentially teach Secondary Mathematics, Physics, Core Maths and MFL in addition to, or as their main subject.
  • Non-specialist teacher who are currently teaching Secondary Mathematics, Physics, Core Maths and MFL (either full-time or in addition to the specialist subject).
  • Teachers who are looking to return to profession.

In partnership with 10 further local lead schools we will coordinate an offer of TSST training across the region which will aim to ensure that all professionals seeking to access high quality TSST training can do so at a convenient geographic location:

What is on offer?

Across the local lead schools a variety of programmes are available which will aim to improve the subject knowledge, pedagogy skills and confidence levels of non-specialist teachers. Specific to secondary mathematics, TSST can contribute to the requirements contained in the revised Ofsted school inspection handbook, revised May 2019 which states that in applying the Education Inspection Framework to the teaching of mathematics Inspectors will consider what steps the school has taken to ensure that “all teachers of mathematics, including non-specialist teachers of mathematics, have sufficient mathematical and teaching content knowledge to deliver topics effectively”
