Physical Education (Core Assessment)
Assessment in Physical Education (PE)
In PE, your child will experience a variety of sports and activities throughout key stage three, in the hope that they find an activity they can continue beyond their education.
Within each activity, we cover a range of skills and attributes to allow all students to gain success in more than just the physical aspects of the sport.
Assessment is now focused on three areas, and these areas progress each year. Please find details of this new assessment and grading system below.
Grading
Gold (G) – Secure
- Students are secure in the content that is being taught and are achieving in all areas.
Silver (S) – Sound
- Students are sound in the content that is being taught and are achieving in most areas.
Bronze (B) – Developing
- Students are working towards developing their skill level in the content being taught but may not be consistent in all areas.
NB. Within each category, students can be graded with a +/-
Core PE Skills
Year 7
Physical
- Movement and Competency (M/C)
Students will be taught the basic skills in a wide range of sports and activities.
- Rules (R)
Students will be taught the rules of a wide range of across a range of sports and activities.
- Tactics (T)
Students will be taught the importance of decision making and applying tactics in different situations across a range of sports and activities.
Leadership
- Students can identify their strengths and weaknesses.
- They will have shown some organisational and leadership skills.
- Students will take on new activities and challenges in PE
Fitness
- Knowledge of Health and Fitness (H&F)
Students will learn about health, fitness and lifestyle choices. They will be taught how to apply these choices to their own lifestyle.
- Physical Fitness
Students will develop the physical fitness to complete all lessons. Students will show resilience in all lessons.
- Competition
Students will experience competition and take on physical challenges throughout the year, aiming to beat their personal best.
Year 8
Physical
- Movement and Competency (M/C)
Students will further develop basic skills and be introduced to more advanced skills in a wide range of sports and activities.
- Rules (R)
Students will be able to apply the rules to a wide range of sports and activities.
- Tactics (T)
Students will be working towards applying some tactics and will be able to make correct decisions under pressure.
Leadership
- Students can identify and explain their strengths and weaknesses.
- They are becoming more confident in their organisational and leadership skills.
- Students will take on new activities and challenges in PE.
Fitness
- Knowledge of Health and Fitness (H&F)
Students will learn about health, fitness and lifestyle choices.
They will be taught how to apply these choices to their own lifestyle.
- Physical Fitness
Students will develop the physical fitness to complete all lessons. Students will show resilience in all lessons.
- Competition
Students will experience competition and take on physical challenges throughout the year, aiming to beat their personal best.
Year 9
Physical

Students will master basic skills and develop in more advanced skills in a wide range of sports and activities.
- Rules (R)
Students will be able to apply rules to a wide range of sports and activities.
- Tactics (T)
Students will be able to apply tactics and strategies to a wide range of sports and activities. They will be aware and make the correct decisions in a competitive situations.
Leadership
- Students can identify, explain and suggest ways to improve their strengths and weaknesses.
- Students are organised and show excellent leadership skills.
- Students will take on new activities and challenges in PE.
Fitness
- Knowledge of Health and Fitness (H&F)
Students will learn about health, fitness and lifestyle choices.
They will be taught how to apply these choices to their own lifestyle.
- Physical Fitness
Students will develop the physical fitness to complete all lessons. Students will show resilience in all lessons.
- Competition
