About us

Welcome to Harton Academy

Welcome to our website, which was launched in November 2015. The website will be continually updated with news and relevant information for staff, students, parents, governors and the wider community. We would welcome any feedback about how the website might continue to be improved and we hope that you find it to be an invaluable resource.

In 2006, we were judged by Ofsted to be ‘outstanding’ in every respect with no significant areas for improvement. In 2009, we featured in a national Ofsted publication entitled “Twelve Outstanding Secondary Schools – Excelling Against the Odds”. In 2011, we featured in a national report by Ofsted into the use of ICT, both the discrete subject and how ICT is used across the curriculum. This report was as a consequence of the inspection of 167 secondary schools over a two year period and we were cited in the report as an example of ‘outstanding’ practice.

In 2010, we became a National Support School and have supported a number of schools both locally and regionally. In 2011, we became one of the very first National Teaching Schools in the country and one of only seven in the north-east. In 2010, we added a brand new sixth form at Harton and it continues to be ever more popular and extremely successful. As a result of adding the sixth form, we were re-inspected by Ofsted in January 2013 and, once again, managed to secure an ‘outstanding’ judgement across all areas.

On 1 September 2017, Harton Technology College was granted Multi Academy Status by the DfE  and is now known as Harton Academy, part of The Illuminare Multi Academy Trust (MAT). This is a yet another exciting development in the history of our school.

We welcome visitors to the school on a very regular basis and the comments about the school are a joy to behold. Please get in touch should you wish to visit us since we feel sure that you will be incredibly impressed with what we have to offer. The behaviour and learning which take place are quite exceptional and there is a fabulous ethos, which visitors always comment upon.

I have had the pleasure of working in this school for the past 35 years and I have been the Headteacher since September 2003. The school has continued to go from strength to strength and we are now a thriving and extremely popular 11-18 mixed Academy. We have over 1600 students and remain the most heavily oversubscribed school in the region. We have been very fortunate to have received many accolades over recent years and I am extremely proud to work in such a magnificent school.

Best Wishes,
Sir Ken Gibson
