Viewing CCTV
Harton Academy operates a CCTV system to protect the pupils, staff and visitors who come onto the site, as well as to protect the site and buildings themselves. Images are recorded and stored for a period of time and are only available to designated staff within the Academy and also those who have a contracted role in relation to the CCTV, for example our Data Protection Officer, or for the purposes of maintenance. In addition to this, the Academy will consider requests from:
- Individuals who wish to see images of themselves, in line with our CCTV Policy (see above);
- Police Officers or other individuals who have a statutory power of entry, and in line with our CCTV policy (see above).
In order that we discharge our duties under Data Protection legislation correctly, all requests to view CCTV images should be made in writing. The one exception to this is if the request is being made to assist with the prevention or detection of crime that is taking place contemporaneously. Requests regarding events which happened “the other day” should be made in the way outlined below.
Please respect the position of the employees of the Academy who are required to request the information in the way given below. They are required to follow our policy and Data Protection legislation. Please also understand that there may be circumstances where, under this same legislation, we are not permitted to share the images. We are required to consider the rights of the individual while complying with the legislation.
Making a request to view CCTV
Members of the public wishing to see CCTV images should email Headteacher@hartonacademy.co.uk and provide full details of what they require. You may be required to provide identification (e.g. passport, driving licence) to confirm your identity.
Police Officers should make an official request in writing which must include a crime reference number, the details of the requesting officer, details of the information required and the purpose of the request (for example to investigate criminal activity). This can also be done on an official form of Northumbria Police – and is often referred to as a 2(1)2. The latest version was entitled “Request to external organisation for the disclosure of personal data to the Police Under Schedule 2 Part 1 Paragraph 2 of the Data Protection Act 2018 and GDPR Article 6(1)”.
