2019 – Gary Lineker OBE

25 October 2019

Once again, it was a privilege to welcome back the Rt Hon David Miliband for his tenth South Shields Annual Lecture at Harton Academy. This year, David’s special guest was non-other than Gary Lineker OBE who was an English former professional footballer and current sports broadcaster.

Gary Lineker began his football career at Leicester City in 1978 and then played at Everton, Barcelona, Tottenham Hotspur and finally Nagoya Grampus Eight.

Gary made his England debut in 1984, earning 80 caps and scoring 48 goals. He was top scorer in the1986 world cup and received the Golden Boot in 1990. He was honoured with the FIFA Fair Play Award having never received a yellow or red card throughout his career.

Over 600 guests enjoyed an incredibly engaging lecture where David and Gary discussed football/Brexit and everything in between!

Once the lecture finished, David and Gary were joined by special guests at Colman’s fish and chip restaurant for a wonderful meal provided by Richard Ord Senior, his wife Frances, Richard Junior and family and staff. Massive thanks to Colman’s and Colman’s Seafood Temple for sponsoring the event.
