Kenya Expedition 2022

A group of five 6th form students have recently returned from an unforgettable and life changing expedition in East Africa. The students were joined by five Kenyan students who were involved in the Becoming X programme who linked with Adventure Alternative to offer a fabulous and incredibly varied trip.

After arriving in Nairobi, the group travelled to a campsite on the outskirts of Embu where they explored the work that the Moving Mountains Charity have been doing over many years with a community rescue centre that works with street children and with the Black Cats football club. It gave a real insight into many of the challenges facing the communities and allowed us to interact and meet lots of children and helpers. The next phase was the challenging 5 day trek up Mount Kenya which is the second highest peak in Africa. The group all successfully reached the summit of the trekking peak at 4985m where they had incredible views and a real sense of achievement. The third phase was to head to Hell Gate national park where they had a cycle safari, a lake safari where they camped on Lake Naivasha. The group were incredibly lucky to have seen rhino’s, zebra’s, giraffe’s, a buffalo, wart hogs, gazelle’s, hippo’s, eagles and many more unusual animals too. The fourth phase took them to Mount Suswa where they camped and climbed up a volcano and also met with a Masai tribe and visited their homestead which was an amazing experience. They visited a bat and baboon cave which had a few of the group squirming a little. The final section was to travel to Nairobi and visit Kibera, one of the world’s largest informal settlements where they had the chance to walk through the narrow streets and sample some local food.

After an amazing 16 days, they returned back with lasting memories and it was without doubt a great experience for all involved. This is just the start of many global adventures for the students involved!!
