NEU’s industrial action on the 1 February
Dear Parents and Carers
As a follow-up to my email last week, here is an update on Harton’s position regarding the NEU’s industrial action on the 1 February next week.
- Unfortunately, Harton Academy will be closed to students on the 1 February 2023.
- Just under half of our teaching staff are members of the NEU, so the school is unable to guarantee that we can maintain a safe environment for our students, especially as other teachers, not in the NEU, are unable to cover their classes.
- Some other schools within South Tyneside have a great deal fewer NEU members, which is why they may remain open to some year groups.
- I will be emailing you nearer the time to advise you of the work your child will be expected to do whilst they are away from school on the 1 February. Striking teachers cannot be expected to set work and others cannot be expected to do it on their behalf, so activities will focus on consolidation and independence.
- Although the school is closed to all students on the day, we are still able to offer a reduced hot meal service between 12.15pm and 1.15pm.
– You will receive an email in the next day or so, asking that you advise us if your child will be in for their lunch on the 1st. This is in order to support the catering team with ordering and preparing the right amount of food.
– If they are coming in for lunch, your child must wear their school uniform. They will be supervised by members of the school’s senior leadership team.
I know that this situation may be difficult for our families, and hope you can appreciate that the school has done all we can to avoid closing on the day. Please look out for my next two communications regarding lunches and work we are setting.
With every good wish.
