New Head Teacher – Mr Jon Skurr
Directors at South Tyneside’s most popular school, Harton Academy, have appointed a new Head Teacher, only the eighth in its history since opening in 1936, following the retirement of the school’s longest serving Head Teacher, Sir Ken Gibson, who completed 20 years-service as Head Teacher and 40 years as a teacher at the school.
Following a rigorous recruitment process, Directors of the Illuminare Multi Academy Trust, of which Harton Academy is a member, appointed Mr Jon Skurr. There was a very strong field of candidates, but it was the unanimous decision of the Directors to appoint Mr Skurr.
Mr Skurr said ‘Harton Academy is a school that gives every student the very best start in life, I am delighted and honoured to be taking up the role of Head Teacher, I am very much looking forward to building on the many successes that the school has achieved during Sir Ken’s tenure as Head – ranging from excellent exam results to the school being an integral part of the local community.
Having already spent a few days in school, I know Harton is an amazing place, with brilliant students and staff. Together we will continue to grow and develop and ensure that every student achieves their full potential and is offered the best opportunities possible’.
Directors said ‘We are looking forward to welcoming Mr Skurr to his role as Head Teacher in the New Year, he has a proven track record of delivering for young people, his skills and partnership work will ensure that Harton continues to have a bright future. We are confident that the successes that Harton has achieved under Sir Ken’s leadership, will continue under our new Head Teacher. Directors also place on record their appreciation to Mr David Amos who has been Acting Head Teacher and remains at Harton Academy as an integral part of the senior leadership team’.
Mr Jon Skurr will take up the role of Head Teacher of Harton Academy on the 1st January 2024.
Mr Skurr will arrange to meet parents in the New Year.
