Royal Shrovetide Football – Ashbourne

On Tuesday 13 February 2024 (Pancake Day), a group of ten Year 12 A level PE students travelled to Ashbourne in Derbyshire to experience first hand, the Royal Shrovetide Football game that takes place over two days each year on Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday.

Mob football is a topic that the students cover in the Socio-cultural section of the course which looks back at the history and origins of activities from pre-industrial times. The activity is an amazing event to witness first hand and as you can see from the photos is a little different to how activities happen today. The students had a great day and got to see plenty of action with the ball going into rivers, through tunnels and across the lake and fields. They did not get to see a goal but the Up’ards did score after 7 hours and 40 minutes at 9.40pm after the ball was thrown up at 2.00pm.
